“That’s a silly name for a camp,” said Olivia. “No wonder they changed it.”

Finley ignored her. “Some folks say it was named after the sound chipmunks make,” she continued. “Anyway, there was this fifth-grade girl, Josie, who loved animals, especially the cute and cuddly kind.”

Olivia narrowed her eyes at Finley. “What is this story about?”

“A girl and a chipmunk,” Finley said. “Only this chipmunk wasn’t like other chipmunks, because . . . ” She lowered her voice to a whisper. “It was a vampire chipmunk.”

Olivia snorted. “That’s ridiculous. There’s no such thing as a vampire chipmunk. Chipmunks are adorable.”

“That’s exactly what Josie thought,” Finley said. “One day, as she and her friends were heading to the fire pit, they realized they’d forgotten the marshmallows. Josie was on her way back from getting them when she heard a noise — CHUK-A-CHICK. CHICK-CHIIICK.”

Finley paused and looked around the campfire circle. Everyone was spellbound, including Olivia.

“Josie looked up and saw a cute chipmunk perched on the branch of a nearby tree,” Finley said. “She stopped to watch it, and it watched her back with its beady little eyes. Suddenly, it occurred to Josie that the little guy might be hungry. She’d read the signs about not feeding the critters, but she figured one little marshmallow couldn’t hurt. It didn’t take her long to coax the chipmunk closer. CHIIICK-A-CHUCK. CHUCK-CHIIICK. Josie held out her hand. But instead of grabbing the marshmallow, the chipmunk sank its fangs into her finger. Before she could scream, it was all over.”

“What happened?” Kate asked, her eyes wide.

Finley glanced around the circle mysteriously. “No one knows for sure. They found the bag of marshmallows on the trail. But Josie was never seen again. They say that same vampire chipmunk still wanders these woods, and on nights when the moon is full, if you listen closely, you can hear Josie’s voice like a warning on the wind: ‘Dooon’t feeed the chipmuuunksssss . . .’”

For a moment, everyone was silent. Then Olivia burst out laughing. “That’s the dumbest ghost story I’ve ever heard.”

Sunny shot her a stern look. “I thought it was very creative,” she said.
