âThatâs a silly name for a camp,â said Olivia. âNo wonder they changed it.â
Finley ignored her. âSome folks say it was named after the sound chipmunks make,â she continued. âAnyway, there was this fifth-grade girl, Josie, who loved animals, especially the cute and cuddly kind.â
Olivia narrowed her eyes at Finley. âWhat is this story about?â
âA girl and a chipmunk,â Finley said. âOnly this chipmunk wasnât like other chipmunks, because . . . â She lowered her voice to a whisper. âIt was a vampire chipmunk.â
Olivia snorted. âThatâs ridiculous. Thereâs no such thing as a vampire chipmunk. Chipmunks are adorable.â
âThatâs exactly what Josie thought,â Finley said. âOne day, as she and her friends were heading to the fire pit, they realized theyâd forgotten the marshmallows. Josie was on her way back from getting them when she heard a noise â CHUK-A-CHICK. CHICK-CHIIICK.â
Finley paused and looked around the campfire circle. Everyone was spellbound, including Olivia.
âJosie looked up and saw a cute chipmunk perched on the branch of a nearby tree,â Finley said. âShe stopped to watch it, and it watched her back with its beady little eyes. Suddenly, it occurred to Josie that the little guy might be hungry. Sheâd read the signs about not feeding the critters, but she figured one little marshmallow couldnât hurt. It didnât take her long to coax the chipmunk closer. CHIIICK-A-CHUCK. CHUCK-CHIIICK. Josie held out her hand. But instead of grabbing the marshmallow, the chipmunk sank its fangs into her finger. Before she could scream, it was all over.â
âWhat happened?â Kate asked, her eyes wide.
Finley glanced around the circle mysteriously. âNo one knows for sure. They found the bag of marshmallows on the trail. But Josie was never seen again. They say that same vampire chipmunk still wanders these woods, and on nights when the moon is full, if you listen closely, you can hear Josieâs voice like a warning on the wind: âDooonât feeed the chipmuuunksssss . . .ââ
For a moment, everyone was silent. Then Olivia burst out laughing. âThatâs the dumbest ghost story Iâve ever heard.â
Sunny shot her a stern look. âI thought it was very creative,â she said.
